THE GUYANA OIL COMPANY LIMITED (GuyOil) was incorporated on 16 June 1976 when the assets of the West Indian Oil Company (Guyana) Limited and Anchor Trading Company Limited were acquired by the then Government of Guyana. The business office was originally located at its Providence Terminal, East Bank Demerara, with a staff compliment of approximately seventeen (17) persons including Clerical and Terminal Staff. In 1978, as a consequence of its growth, the Company moved its Head Office to rented facilities at 166 Waterloo Street, Georgetown. GuyOil is now housed in its owned Head Office (acquired 12 December 2013) at 191 Camp Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown.
The Company is wholly State owned with its shares held by the National Industrial Commercial & Investments Limited (N.I.C.I.L.). The business of GuyOil include the importation, storage and marketing of Gasoil, Gasoline, Kerosene, Heavy Fuel Oil, , Motor Accessories, CASTROL Lubricants, Bituminous Products and, through its wholly owned subsidiary, GuyOil Aviation Services Inc., Aviation Fuel for the international Airline Industry.
The assets acquired in 1976 included properties in Regent Street, Providence and Kitty. On 24 November 1982, the Victoria property was acquired. GuyOil built its first new Service Station at Public Road, Kitty, followed by Stations at Sheriff Street, Diamond, Palmyra and Heathburn in Berbice. The Service Stations at Kitty, Regent Street and Diamond provide modernized wash-bay and automated lubrication services. There are three (3) GUYSHOPS Convenience Stores) at its Regent Street, Sheriff Street and Kitty Service Stations. In addition, CASTROL lubricants as well as motor accessories are available at all GuyOil Service Stations and Branded Dealer owned Service Stations.
The Company has expanded and progressed over the years under the Chairmanship of Messrs. Mortimer Codette, Paul Chan-a-Sue, Edgar Heyliger, Shaik Baksh, the late Dr Keshav (Bud) Mangal and presently Everette L. Carberry. GuyOil was managed initially by Mr. Carl Hooper Snr., its first Managing Director, succeeded by Mr. Shaik Baksh, Mr. Kadirulla, Mr. Naresh Singh, Mr. Badrie Persaud, followed by Managing Directors (Ag.) Ms. Lesley Benjamin and, presently, Mr. Reggie Bhagwandin.
The Company has the largest fuel distribution network in Guyana. The main storage and distribution Terminal is located at Providence, East Bank Demerara, with others at Heathburn, East Bank Berbice, and Adventure, Essequibo Coast. The combined storage capacity is in excess of 75,000 bbls.
From these Terminals, products are distributed throughout the country to large customers, Government Ministries and Agencies, Fuel Peddlers, the Security Services – Army, Police, Fire and Prison Services – and to our retail fuel distribution network of eight (8) Company-owned Service Stations and thirty-five (35) GuyOil Branded Dealer-owned Service Stations, located in Regions 2, 3,4, 5 and 6.
The Company bought, in the early 1980’s, a Coastal Tanker, which was branded “GUY SUPPLIER’. This boat transported petroleum products by river to various customers. Since then, GuyOil has progressively increased its road tanker capacity to deliver fuel to its Dealer-owned and Company-owned Stations. In May 2016, Guyoil increased its delivery capacity with the acquisition of a new 10,000US Gallon tanker.
The Company has diversified its business with the establishment of its wholly owned subsidiary company, GUYOIL Aviation Services Inc., located at the International Airport, Timehri, East Bank Demerara. This Company is intended to supply Jet A-1 Fuel to the international airlines carriers servicing the Guyana market.
GUYOIL has established a Food Court Facility, which houses popularly known fast-food concessionaires, located in the compound of its Diamond service station on the East Bank of Demerara.
GuyOil is now a large Commercial Petroleum products Company with a Staff of approximately 400 and total assets of G$9.4 billion.
